But I think that it would be useful
for the Governor to have them and Mr. Crook's
memorandum (15, Appendix A, on 71842), and that
they would help both him and the Vice-Chancellor
in further discussion locally. I suggest
therefore that they might be sent in continuation
either s.o. or in a confidential despatch, with
the remark that some of the suggestions made in
the course of discussion may be found useful, and
that Professor Soothill is understood to be
collecting further information regarding the
position and future of Chinese studies in China
proper, and that any information that he supplies
will be forwarded to the Governor.
After action has been taken on this, I
shall be glad if the papers can be sent to Mr.
Poynton for action in accordance with his minute
of 20. 2. 31. on 71842, i.e. the experts who
have been consulted ought to be sent copies of
the final minutes of the first meeting, and the
minutes of the second meeting, and Professor
Soothill ought to be told that further information
which he is collecting will be gratefully received
and passed on.
